Linux Genealogy Install CD 1.0

October 29, 2005

Linux Genealogy Install CD
The GRAMPS Project has released the Linux Genealogy Install CD 1.0. This is the companion CD to the Linux Genealogy Live CD (mentioned here a few weeks ago), which allowed you to run Linux and genealogy programs that run under Linux off of a “Live” CD (meaning you didn’t have to install Linux to your computer, you just put the CD in and booted off of it). This CD allows you to install Linux and the genealogy programs previously mentioned. For more information, please read the developer’s blog.

More information from the developers:

In contrast with the Live CD, this disk allows permanent installation of Linux and genealogical software on your computer’s hard drive. This way you achieve adequate speed and the ability to save your data, and can do real work with your Linux software. In particular, it makes a perfect gift for genealogists who want to work on Linux.

This disc contains a complete Ubuntu installer and, in addition to the regular Breezy, features pre-installed GRAMPS, GeneWeb, and LifeLines applications, as well as GraphViz program to draw pretty graphs in GRAMPS. Everything is similar to the Live CD, except that this is a permanent setup.

To download the CD image, please refer to the bottom of this page (gramps-project.org) for both ftp/http and Bittorent downloads. The Linux Genealogy Live CD was reviewed a few weeks ago at Eastman’s Online Genealogy Newsletter.

Forays into genealogy data modelling I and II

October 24, 2005

Leif Biberg Kristensen, in the usenet group, soc.genealogy.computing (google.com), has written about a project that they are currently working entitled Forays into genealogy data modelling I and II :

I have written a couple of articles about the migration of my data from a TMG database to a full-fledged SQL RDBMS. The project is still in progress, and I’ll probably continue to write about this stuff on my homesite as long as I’m working on it. Don’t hold your breath for a finished application, though, unless someone with guts are stepping in to do all the coding for me :-)

A major announcement (and an interesting one) from the GRAMPS Project :

The GRAMPS project is proud to announce the first release of the Linux Genealogy Live CD. This disc contains bootable Live Linux environment and added Linux Genealogical software. In particular, it makes a perfect gift for genealogists stuck with other OS-s! With this disc, you can boot and run Linux genealogical (and other) software without touching anything on the hard drive.

Linux Genealogy Live CD
