PhpGedView Version 4.0 Snapshot/CVS (Nov 02)
November 3, 2005
There is a PhpGedView “Version 4.0 snapshot” CVS available. There are currently no release notes (you can download it from here). This is the second CVS snapshot that’s been made available (the first was at the beginning of October). PhpGedView parses GEDCOM 5.5 genealogy files and displays them on the internet in formats and charts that you are familiar with. It also allows relatives to edit their genealogy online and collaborate together on their research.
Since it’s a major version change, 3.3.x -> 4.0 or 3.3.x -> 3.4, it’s safe to assume that this will be a major update to PhpGedView.
One of the things mentioned in the PhpGedView forums is some kind of new “media features” - beyond that we are unsure of changes and additions.
Keep in mind this is a development version of PhpGedView - it’s our advice that you do not use this in a “production” environment, because you risk problems cropping up (and you don’t want to put your family through beta testing). Instead, if you want to help with the bug reporting/feature suggestions, you should probably set this up with it’s own database/directory/etc.
GDBI v13 (GEDCOM Database Interface)
October 2, 2005
GDBI v13 is now available. GDBI (GEDCOM Database Interface) is an open-source, cross-platform program written in Java. It can be downloaded here (sourceforge.net).
GDBI is a genealogy program integrator. It includes an editor and the lifelines report language. It interfaces to 3 GEDCOM databases: phpGedView, GenJ (GenealogyJ), and jLifelines. At the core is a common Java API to simplify adding more databases and editors.
* For PhpGedView users…
GDBI is a family tree editor that runs on your local PC. It is more convenient and powerful than the web interface.* For Java developers…
GDBI is an API for using GEDCOM, so you can write editors and reports that work with several databases.
What’s New
* Added new GEDCOM import feature!
* Automatically save all PGV connections, added new options
* Began work on a local filesystem-based database
What’s Fixed
* Fixed several bugs in merge, especially when using PGV
* Fixed anonymous access for PGV 3.3.x
* Bug 1248950: allow last names with spaces
