October 23, 2005

A major announcement (and an interesting one) from the GRAMPS Project :

The GRAMPS project is proud to announce the first release of the Linux Genealogy Live CD. This disc contains bootable Live Linux environment and added Linux Genealogical software. In particular, it makes a perfect gift for genealogists stuck with other OS-s! With this disc, you can boot and run Linux genealogical (and other) software without touching anything on the hard drive.

Linux Genealogy Live CD

This Live CD is based on the Ubuntu Linux distribution, and contains the following genealogy applications:
* GRAMPS
* GeneWeb
* LifeLines

It also contains the GraphViz program for illustration/graphs within GRAMPS

You can download the CD images from links located on this page at the GRAMPS project page.

Lifelines 3.0.49

October 10, 2005

There has been another release of LifeLines, beta 3.0.49. LifeLines is a genealogy program to help with your family history research. Its primarily strengths are its powerful scripting language and the ability easily import and export information in the GEDCOM format. You can download it here (sourceforge.net). This release is only a bug fix release, and shouldn’t introduce any new bugs. This is an open source cross-platform program.

Fixed
* Deleting an individual would remove younger siblings from family

GDBI v13 (GEDCOM Database Interface)

October 2, 2005

GDBI v13 is now available. GDBI (GEDCOM Database Interface) is an open-source, cross-platform program written in Java. It can be downloaded here (sourceforge.net).

GDBI is a genealogy program integrator. It includes an editor and the lifelines report language. It interfaces to 3 GEDCOM databases: phpGedView, GenJ (GenealogyJ), and jLifelines. At the core is a common Java API to simplify adding more databases and editors.

* For PhpGedView users…
GDBI is a family tree editor that runs on your local PC. It is more convenient and powerful than the web interface.

* For Java developers…
GDBI is an API for using GEDCOM, so you can write editors and reports that work with several databases.

What’s New
* Added new GEDCOM import feature!
* Automatically save all PGV connections, added new options
* Began work on a local filesystem-based database

What’s Fixed
* Fixed several bugs in merge, especially when using PGV
* Fixed anonymous access for PGV 3.3.x
* Bug 1248950: allow last names with spaces
